The Black Rock Historical Society has been dedicated to educating the community about our history from its inception. One of the most effective ways we have found to educate but also to learn from others has been our speaker series. We conduct the series twice a year, one in the Spring and one in the Fall.

The Black Rock Historical Society has been dedicated to educating the community about our history from its inception. One of the most effective ways we have found to educate but also to learn from others has been our speaker series. We conduct the series twice a year, one in the Spring and one in the Fall.
For the last few years, we have been highlighting a Maker Series dedicated to the hard working and creative people who have made our community such a wonderful place to live. Starting with Stained Glass in 2022, a tribute to the many churches in our area we highlighted the history and restoration work being done by people from our community, for our community.
In 2023 we highlighted the brick, stone and plaster workers. Many still in our community are serving the world with their talents. We added a hands-on piece which proved to be more fun than one group of people should have.
This year, 2024, was the year of our wood workers. From doors and windows to hand crafted furniture to decorative pieces. We find more and more craftspeople in our community than we know existed. This is a very popular series for us and we are already planning 2025.
We believe 2025 will be the year of paper and books. We cannot wait to showcase our papermakers, book binders and book creators. This has already spurred an author’s night highlighting our local authors to be held at our museum.
Fall History Series
Complimenting the spring series is our fall history series. This is a much more diverse series highlighting everything form the War of 1812 to the Underground railroad. We have looked at brewing in our neighborhood and how to identify the age of your home. Our expert speakers are always educational and so worthwhile. We also highlight speakers on special projects that we might be working on or to commemorate special anniversaries. The 200th anniversary of the Erie Canal will surely hold our attention for the coming year.
